"Mollusks use their shells in so many different ways - as revealed in this beautiful book. Well written and superbly illustrated. Read aloud. Book talk for independent or small group reading. Use as a mentor text in writing workshop.

Suggestions for READING ALOUD -
*Read aloud just the larger print the first time - "Seashells can flit and flutter like a butterfly..." and then a second time stop to read the smaller print which gives students more information about a particular mollusk and its shell.
*After an initial read aloud, slow down and let students look at the illustrations and diagrams. Pose questions like, "How does the diagram of the chiton and the armadillo help you make the author's comparison between the two?" or "Why do you think the illustrator chose to use labels for the illustration of the abalone, but not for the thorny oyster?"
*Read aloud the large print and then ask students to think about what they "add to their learning" by listening to you read aloud the small print. Then look at the illustrations and ask again, "What can we add to our learning beyond what was in the text on this page?"
*Read aloud the author's and illustrator's notes and pose the question, "How did they use the world around them to engage in research?"

USE AS A MENTOR TEXT IN WRITING WORKSHOP - Find Stewart's Feathers: Not Just for Flying. Ask students to look at both texts and notice the similarities in text structure and design. Both books may help students think about how to narrow down their research focus (from "all about birds" to...), to stay focused in their writing, to explore the use of graphics to support their writing.

K-LS1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals need to survive.
1-LS1-1 Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how animals use their external parts to help them survive, grown, and meet their needs.
2-LS4-1 Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.
3-LS4-3 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.
4-LS1-1 Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior and reproduction.

Melissa Stewart is a "go to" author for me. Her writing is easy to read (while she addresses complex concepts), accessible to a diverse group of learners.
Sarah Brannen's watercolors support Stewart's text AND take the reader beyond the info in the text. In other words, students can learn a lot just by "reading" Brannen's illustrations.
Looking forward to seeing what this duo does together next!!!!

" So glad to finally see the finished copy. I read a PDF so long ago that I couldn't even mark it on GoodReads at the time. Love this book. " said.

" A very informative book on shells. A bit text heavy for most younger readers, but chock-full of information. " said.

" Randomly found this at the library. Its a quick read but had a good amount of information about various seashells. To bad I didn't read this before my trip to the beach. Overall this was an enjoyable read. " said.
