" 3.5. Classic CYOA with a real-life history twist. " said.

" An engaging experience in a tiny package. The book is just right for kids to tote around and try all the different adventure options. There must be hundreds of combinations. At the end of the book there are facts on the life of James Armistead Lafayette as well as a timeline on the history of slavery. Would recommend this one to reluctant readers for sure.A big thank you to Chooseco and Edelweiss for a paperback ARC of this fun new title. " said.

" I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have love CYOA books for a very long time. I have hundreds of them in my teenage years. I do have to say that I have terrible luck to get through the story. It took a couple plays through before I got a better ending. The story was a good one and I have seen there are more in this series. I am going to look into what other stories they have.  " said.

"This book left me wanting more which is always a good sign of an engaging CYOA book. Unlike the odd weirdness of the Mata Hari book in the Spies series, this book mostly remains grounded in reality (mostly; do expect some oddities with small animals being integral to war as well as one strange bodily transformation). This makes for a refreshing change as often these books take suspension of disbelief to a new level. Its good to see this series is still alive, and this book is a fresh new addition to my collection. The writing is splendid, and the story is fun and engaging. I hope to see more from Kyandreia Jones." said.

"I loved choose your own adventure books as a kid, and I'm glad to see these more again now. This book is brilliant in that it has that active element of choosing your own adventure, while teaching you a lot of history along the way. Perfect for reluctant readers, and excellent timing for summer reading.

The back of the book gives you the story of James Armistead Lafayette and his work as a spy, despite his status as a slave. It also talks about his journey to freedom--fascinating and inspiring. I loved how the author really brings history (and James Armistead Lafayette as a person) to life in this book.

The book also gives you a short, by-year summary of the history of slavery and emancipation in the U.S.

I could see this making a great read-aloud for teachers--how fun to choose your own adventure as a class. Highly recommend.
