" Cute story with a great lesson for kids. " said.

" My kids love this book. It was an interesting way to remind them not to get into cars with strangers, what kind of secrets are bad to keep, being brave, belief in themselves and more... It's a good book for 8-12 year old children. " said.

"A story with a lesson

The Rocking Horse is a story with an important message to send to kids about the dangers of interacting with strangers and the importance of being careful and observant when they’re out in the world without their parents. It undertook this important mission in a highly effective way: by telling a cautionary tale about two girls interacting with the ghost of a young girl who wasn’t careful enough and who paid for her mistake with her life. At times while trying to get her point across, I thought the ghost girl sounded more like an adult than a child, but her message gets through loud and clear and she has a great suggestion regarding the need for families to create a “pickup password” so kids won’t be fooled into going off with strangers who say their parents sent them (as the ghost girl did).

I liked the relationship between the sisters and how it grew during the course of the story and I liked seeing it all through the eyes of Michaela, the older of the two girls. It was fun to see the thought processes of a nine-year-old girl and her voice was spot-on for what you’d expect from a child of that age. At times, she directly addresses the reader (like when she tells them to cover their eyes so they can understand how dark it is in the room) and I imagine children would find this charming, as did I. I also liked the part where she talked about the tree she’d befriended and how it held its secrets in its leaves. It was a quick read that held my attention, despite the fact that I’m not of the age the book is intended for.

All in all, an entertaining story that does exactly what it sets out to do: teaches kids an important lesson in a way they’ll be sure to remember.
