"Eppard offers simplified lines and basic shapes to illustrate the structure of drawing horses, along with examples of shading and coloring that help inspire more realistic techniques. Novice artists will have to infer some of the steps that are implied, but not shown due to the brevity of the volume; this volume is more useful to advanced drawing students. Most drawings in the book only show three or four steps from start to finish. Nonetheless, all artists inclined to draw equines should be inspired to spend hours drawing the eight different horse breeds in many different stances (standing, running, leaping, and in profile).

The text provides a little background or an introduction to each breed, which include Arabian, Clydesdale, Morgan, Paint, Lipizzan, Shetland, Appaloosa, and Thoroughbred horses. Each double-page spread also includes drawing tips, in addition to the drawing instructions. A short section at the beginning provides an overview to the tools of an artist, and the back section includes a brief index, glossary, and reading list.
