" Rena the dog and Roo the burro learn to trust one another, and work as a team to herd and guard the sheep. " said.

" I love reading books like this to my PJ Storytimers (1st-4th graders)! Great photos and a nice story about animals - what child doesn't like animals? " said.

" Good story about teamwork and working animals. Great photographs. " said.

" I always enjoy these photo-picture stories about unexpected animal symbiotic relationships. This story is a cute read about a burro and a dog who work together to guard a flock of sheep. " said.

" Simple introduction to animal relationships on a farm/ranch and a great example of team work. " said.

"I originally picked up this book because I was looking for something on sheep. At first I was unsure how I would enjoy it because so many books of this sort are the same old overly simple "this animal is friends with this animal" concept and are so full of excess sweet that you get sick from it half way through.

This book may be simple enough for very young children, but it is not afraid to add longer words to a child's vocabulary in a way that they can easily understand. The premise of animal friendship is handled in a mature way that is all encompassing and comes full circle as the animals grow and move on from one job to another.

An excellent circle time story for talking about jobs animals do, about life on an animal farm, and (of course) about friendship.

"This is a very cute book about a orphan donkey and a runt of the litter dog that learn to guard orphan sheep as they grow up. This is something that can be very important on ranches as the farm animals need someone to watch out for them so the are not killed by predators. The pictures do a great job of illustrating the story so that it is easy to understand what the animals are doing.

I chose to pair this book with one called Twist and Ernest by Laura T. Barnes and illustrated by Carol A. Camburn. I thought that these would pair well together as the fiction book is about a little donkey who is looking for a friend. But he had trouble because the new horse wasn't interested in being friends with him at first. In The Guardian Team, Rena and Roo the dog and donkey have to get used to being around each other before they learn to be friends and share their job. I thought that children might be interested in learning about how animals on farms can learn to like one another and work together after reading Ernest and Twist.

" The Guardian Team is a beautifully-presented children’s book about a donkey and a Great Pyrenees dog who are trained to be guard animals for a flock of sheep. Children and adults alike will enjoy the crisp color photos depicting the animals growing up and taking responsibility for the wooly charges.

Rena and Roo are part of a small but growing movement to make ranching more wildlife-friendly by employing livestock guardian animals, rather than the old way of ranchers shooting, poisoning, and trapping every predatory animal in sight.

True, some veg*n parents aren’t going to like the fact that the book centers around sheep being raised agriculturally, as well as the fact that the donkey is a product of the Bureau of Land Management’s controversial wild horse and burro roundups. (The author simply repeats the “company line” about this being done to prevent overgrazing.)

Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this book, especially to teachers and librarians in the Western ranching states. In a positive, engaging way, this book shows that ranching can be done in harmony with nature, and that conflicts with wildlife don’t have to end with cyanide M-44s and Compound 1080.
