"I read this non-fiction book aloud to my children.

This is a great science set, which contains a textbook with an Audio CD. The textbook contains 11 chapters that cover the scientific method, living things, invertebrates, vertebrates, birds, plants, algae and fungi, vascular and non-vascular plants, protozoa, genetics, viruses, and bacteria. Each chapter has an accompanying song that has a familiar tune (such as, "Clementine" and "If You're Happy and You Know It"), but the lyrics to the song have been changed to contain scientific facts!

I bought this for my Grade 4 daughter to use, but my 4 year-old has just as much fun with it! There is nothing cuter than hearing a 4 year-old singing, "Oh, what do you think a scientist does to solve a problem found because many scientists are scientists 'cause they're great problem solvers. There is a systematic way they go about 'most every day, it's methodical and it's logical, the scientific method" (excerpt of lyrics from "The Scientific Method").

We also bought the accompanying workbook, which contains fill-in-the-blank questions for the lyrics to each song. That is followed by true and false questions, labelling diagrams, matching questions and answers, short answer questions, and long answer (essay) questions. The song lyrics contain the answers to all the questions, so it is a good review although not necessary.

It is a proven fact that it is easier to memorize information that is set to music, and this method really does work!

"I teach in a Montessori classroom and am always looking for new ways to make learning fun. This is a great book! It has helped me link music and science together. The concepts in the songs are sophisticated and interesting. The text is informative and funny." said.

"I bought this book in good condition, and it was fair at best. I thought it came with a cd or tape, but it was only the book. I don't know all of the tunes, so I will have to research them. It was a cheap price, but I am not happy with the condition." said.

"This review is not about how helpful this is for children. This is just to let you know that this is ONLY the book and it needs the CD to go with it. I recommend buying it NEW or make sure you also buy the CD because it is useless without it!" said.

"Great Curriculum! Accompanies Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Memory work (science) well, which is what I needed for my daughter's third time through Cycle 1 as we prepare for the Challenge years." said.

"I've used this curriculum for a few months now and overall I dislike it very much.

The songs are a clever idea, but they are somewhat poorly written - the author takes great liberty with grammar making them a bit hard to understand. The first few songs are extremely fast and hard to keep up with. For some songs the singer over-stylized them to the point that it is very distracting. For instance, the Marsupial song (in another volume) is to an Elvis tune, and the singer goes so far with the Elvis thing that my kids just look at the CD player like they think he's crazy - and it makes the words more difficult to understand.

The text is not very well written - it gets some facts out but not in an interesting style. I love science but find the reading very tedious. I'd say it is too shallow for my 10 year old who loves reading science and the songs are way to hard for my 15 year old who's delayed and has been speaking English for only 3 years.

The chapters are of unequal length - some 2 pages some many more - so you don't know what to expect week-to-week work-load wise. Then there are several questions in the workbook that are not answered anywhere in the text. While we can find the answers elsewhere I find that very odd.

The illustrations don't always clearly match up with the text, and are few and far between.

The text is really about mammals more than anything. Arthropods, reptiles, etc., are just discussed, not really covered. Mammals make up a very small percentage of life on this planet, so I find that disappointing. I would prefer a life-science curriculum that is much more balanced.

If you child really loves music they may learn and remember a lot of facts from this curriculum. If your child is an English-language learner (one of mine is) the songs will just be baffling.
