" Love these books. Gives me just enough info to interest me in learning more. " said.

" Quick, easy to read. Has some interesting facts, but is really just a brief overview of selected kings and queens from history. " said.

"Davis' new series of junior "Don't Know Much Books" are less successful than the adult versions; they tend to be episodic parades of "history's greatest hits" while failing to link significant events in any coherent framework. So, we get the colorful stories of Henry III's zoo, Henry VIII's wives, the Princes in the Tower etc., without much explanation of the connections between rulers.

A quick example: the problem of royal minorities and murky lines of succession led to the downfalls of both Richard II and Henry VI, and were a major factor in the Wars of the Roses. It was the fear of leaving a similar monarchical uncertainty that drove Henry VIII's single-minded determination to produce a legitimate son, thus leading to his separation from his first wife and the Catholic Church, and ultimately to the triumph of the Reformation in England. Yet you'd never know that from Davis's simplistic descriptions: "Henry VI lost his crown to King Edward IV, then gained it back, then lost it again". The significant fact that Henry began his reign as a 9 month old baby is not mentioned.

"Kings and Queens" has skillful illustrations, clearly inspired by famous royal portraits, and artwork such as the Dance of Death and the Bayeux Tapestry. It also contains interesting sidebars on royal fashion, education, marriages; and touches on social issues such as knighthood, and the Black Death. The design is pleasing and kid friendly, and any child reading this will pick up a lot of facts. I just wish Davis had worked a little harder at connecting them.
