" Z...Beautiful artwork. I love the story! " said.

" I have heard of this movie, but didn't realize it was based on the borrowers till I read it. Graphics look like they were pulled right from the movie. Text is very simple. It reads like an early reader, but format is like picture book. The Borrowers is very popular at my school right now. Some kids would find this more accessible, I'm sure. " said.

""Planned by Hayao Miyazaki and using much of the shooting script as its text, this delightful book incorporates stills from the film as its illustrations. Its large-scale font is easy to read, and the many images keep the pages turning and young minds involved in the story." " said.

"I haven't seen the Miyazaki film yet. Neither has our 4-year-old daughter Sigourney, but that didn't stop her from loving the picture book. We read it over three nights at bedtime. Each night, she wanted to keep going to make sure things worked out well for Arrietty.

I can't help but compare the picture book/screen shot version to other Miyazaki films. A format of snap shots with supporting text can't quite do justice to his art. Lingering views of surroundings and atmospheric music play important roles in the film. They serve as meditation pieces. A picture book format chops things up into frames, makes transitions more abrupt. So for me, the book suffers in comparison to the greatness of Miyazaki's on-screen versions. Of course, the film version of The Secret World of Arrietty could be a disappointment. If Sigourney has her way (which she will), we'll watch it soon and report.

As a stand-alone work, the picture book does have merit. Check out the shots of the doll house interior. Miyazaki at his artistic best.

" I wasn't that interested in this story. But the art is lovely. " said.

" 5 stars for delightful pictures and a moving, action-packed and sweet story (though it's been written simply for younger readers). I found the picture order a little out of order, somewhat jilting the experience, so I'll call this 4.5 stars. " said.

"I haven't seen the gilm yet (cheating, I know), but I read the Borrowers when I was a kid and that basically superscedes anything. I was not overly impressed with this book though! Like most of the other Ghibli comics, the effect of taking screen stills and adding text comes off as half-assed at best. Assuming that the film has a similar stylistic tone as the other Ghibli productions, the book totally missed the subtlety of the filmmaking and leaves the reader feeling like they're missing some of the story.
