" A lot of writing in this series, making it hard to read to any age of kid who has not already met all of these community helpers. Grade 2 might be able to sit through it. " said.

"Text Features: Table of contents, illustrations, captions with facts, glossary, index, list of other books to learn more about dentists
Text Structure: Narrative nonfiction, Description

Paired fiction text: Bear's Loose Tooth
Wilson, K., & Chapman, J. (2011). Bear's loose tooth. New York, NY: Margaret K. McElderry Books.

Students will want to explore real-world connections, read new genres, and their vocabulary will be enhanced when nonfiction supplements fiction (Miller, 2013). The well-known and beloved children’s character, Bear, will get students’ excited about losing their baby teeth in their book Bear’s Loose Tooth. Bear gets a visit from the tooth fairy, but where do people go when we need our teeth taken care of? Find out along with a class on a field trip to a dentist’s office in Let’s Meet a Dentist. This nonfiction text will answer students’ questions about their teeth and empower them with the knowledge necessary to not be afraid of the dentist. Together, and Let’s Meet a Dentist make a great text set for discussing oral hygiene during National Children’s Dental Health Month in February.

Strategy Application: Read aloud . Facilitate conversation in which students are making text-to-self connections about their own wiggly teeth and visits from the tooth fairy. Transition the class into a discussion about how we take care of our teeth. Introduce National Children’s Dental Health Month, in health this month we’ll focus on oral hygiene and we’ll even be visited by a dentist! Before then, we need to know who a dentist is and what they do. Have students create a web of words or drawings that they associate with the dentist. As a prereading strategy, students offer ideas about a central topic. During reading, students attention should be directed to the headings or chapter titles (Camp, 2010). As you read Let’s Meet a Dentist aloud, ask students which of their bubbles might relate to each chapter title. After reading, students should cross out any bubbles which are not actually related to the topic and add bubbles with new information they learned.
