" The art is lovely and I deeply appreciate the realistic presentation of a cat's point of view: "only my own comfort matters." " said.

"It Takes A Village...

SPOILER. The story is straightforward, simple and touching. Everyone on Blossom Street loves the neighborhood cat, (who is called by a different name in each household). One day he disappears and the search for him leads the neighbors to Mrs. Murray, a lonely, overlooked neighbor lady who has taken Archie-Snufflekins-etc. in, (or perhaps has been taken in by Archie). The neighbors embrace Archie and Mrs. Murray, who is lonely and overlooked no more.

Sure, the ending is a bit pat and doesn't stand up to scrutiny, (I wondered why the neighbors needed Archie to lead them to this nice lady living in their midst), but of course that's not the point and it's a bit churlish to be critical. The larger point about community and looking out for each other is one worth making and I'm willing to go with it even if I have to follow a cat in order to do so.

In any event, Archie is O.K. insofar as cats go and the neighbors are intentionally created to represent the most completely diverse group possible. Each neighbor gets a panel showing his or her interaction with Archie, and those drawings are amusing and good hearted. Archie's comfortable connection with Mrs. Murray is also big hearted and cheerful. The overall effect is one of calm, natural goodness, and that's nothing to take lightly.

All of this is enhanced by simple, (almost naif), drawings that are more subtle and expressive than they appear the first time you look through the book. The print is crisp and the text minimal. This feels like a good bedtime book. There are lots of people to look at, Archie is cute, and there are a few notable little jokes hidden here and there. The message is sweet and mild, which is how I like my bedtime books. So, all in all, a happy find.

" This picture book is the perfect pick-me-up. It promotes caring, community building and cultural appreciation without being the least bit preachy. And the illustrations are wonderful. " said.

" A phenomenal picture book...I would give it 10 stars if I could. Perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay it is to say that I had to stop myself from crying big ugly tears at work after I finished reading it, it was so effective and beautiful. The artwork is gorgeous and the story is equal parts touching and favorite kind of combination in a book. Highly recommended to picture book lovers and cat lovers everywhere. " said.

" Wonderfully cute and sweet book about a cat who finds the perfect home. A great message about caring for others---human and animal, too. " said.

"This is the tale of a cat with many owners. He goes from one to the other, and each family thinks he's theirs and names him how they want. But when he meets a quiet woman who is clearly a dog person but lonely, he befriends her and realizes he wants to be her cat. What do his families do when they find him missing? Or when they realize their cat is also everyone else's cat? Let's just say the woman isn't so alone any more and the cat is very happy with the arrangement.

It was a heartwarming story. The illustrations and art style were bold and fun, with words sprawling all over the place and lots of little details it would be easy to overlook if you don't spend time.

Definitely a cute book!
