" Picture book biography with poetic prose. " said.

" It's difficult to put the luminous life of Dorothea Lange into a picture book form - the text, as a result, is a bit uneven and leaves the reader wanting more (not such a bad thing...) Illustrations are interesting but Lange's photo's are so great! " said.

"I have long admired the photograph of the woman with her children revealing the impact of the Great Depression on the poor. This image invokes such emotion and sympathy. Never knowing who snapped the image recording it for thousands to see, it was a privilege to learn a bit about the individual responsible.

In this children's book the unusual life of Dorothea Lange is briefly told from her history of crippling polio to her traveling across the United States capturing images of the people and their hardships and emotions. As the author states... "she was a storyteller with a camera."

The uncorrected proof I received, showed the illustrations in basic neutrals with only touches of color. The figures are basic and look somewhat abstract in form. This is in keeping with the bleak, bare story Dorothea Lange captured in her photography.

A children's book, this is a good introduction to how capturing the faces and emotions with a camera can benefit generations to come and tell the story.

DISCLOSURE: I received an uncorrected proof to facilitate a review. Opinions are my own, alone.

" A quick biography of a remarkable woman. " said.

"Picture book biography that introduces young readers to Dorothea Lange. Weatherford shows how Lange overcame disability and life's difficulties to become an important professional photographer who showed the world the tragic realities of the Great Depression through her photos. Sarah Green's illustrations really capture the bleakness of the Great Depression with the muted color palette when Weatherford's book shows how Lange photographed those years. The book also contains an author's note with some of Lange's important photographs, photos which capture a lot of emotion within. Nice introductory text that doesn't explain Lange's significance as much as I would've liked but that will hopefully inspire readers to want to learn more about her. I also wasn't a fan of the illustrations' attempt to reproduce a few of Dorothea Lange's important photos. At least several were reproduced in the author's note." said.

" Pioneering female photographer who captured America during the Great Depression and WWII. " said.

" A biography of a famous photographer who captured the harsh realities of the country during the Great Depression. I enjoyed the back matter more than the actual story. " said.

"Current technology allows us to capture a split second with a photograph or a series of moments with video simply using our phones. We can document anything anywhere at any time. For those pictures and videos to have an impact outside our own personal realm though, we need to give the subject matter more than a quick click. For those devoted to the art of photography or videography either as amateurs or professionals, it is a fact that rarely is the ultimate photograph or video created on the first try. Sometimes it can take a lifetime of work to produce a masterpiece.

In both fields the person behind the camera must see the world differently than others bringing certain aspects more sharply into focus. Dorothea Lange: The Photographer Who Found the Faces of the Depression (Albert Whitman & Company, February 28, 2017) written by Carole Boston Weatherford with pictures by Sarah Green portrays the essence of a woman who saw people and places others did not. She knew how to bring our attention to those people and places ignored or forgotten by others.
