" I was supposed to receive a copy of this book for review after winning a giveaway. Unfortunately, it was lost somewhere on its way to me - I just looked through my giveaway records and it's been 3 years, so it's safe to assume it'll never arrive. Which is a pity, because I like the idea and wanted to read it to my son. I usually give one star in such cases, but all the reviews of this book are good, and there are not a lot, so I think I'll refrain and just leave it unrated. " said.

The stories, songs, crafts, and pictures in this short book tell about China, both from long ago as well as modern day. The stories describe how China and the world came to be. The crafts are fun and do not require a lot of objects that you do not already have around the house. The only craft that would take some time is the one that asks you to use calligraphy to decorate a card. Other than that the crafts should not take too long but still introduce you to Chinese culture.

"All About China is a lovely balance of story and history, facts and culture, stunningly illustrated on every page with color and detail that kids (and adults) will return to and enjoy, noticing something new each time. The book is a visual feast, and the illustrations do pair perfectly with the text in every single section -- so that even young readers (or non-readers) will enjoy poring over each page. From cool "did you know?" kinds of facts about China's history, to its inventions, myths, games, culture, crafts and family-friendly recipes, this is a great primer on a fascinating country. I liked very much that the author didn't drag out the usual/generic stories and facts. Her mix of information is different and useful, and seems chosen with love: from calligraphy lessons to moon cake recipes for the Chinese New Year, from typical Chinese pets to how to sing "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" in Mandarin. (Because, why not?)

Note: other reviewers have mentioned that it's "accessible." That's true -- almost any background or reading ability will find a way to access the knowledge in this beautifully packed book. But "accessible" doesn't mean dumbed down: I studied Chinese history in college, and I still learned a few things!

I bought this book for a Chinese friend's daughter, as well as for young relatives who were born in China but adopted into my family. They've all loved it. I'm considering buying another as a gift to our elementary school library.

"Allison Branscombe's "All About China" is a tremendous addition to the library of anyone, young or old, who is curious about Chinese history, geography, language, and culture. Skillfully paced and beautifully illustrated by Lin Wang, "All About China" provides rich and memorable insight into a culture that Branscombe clearly has expertise in and passion for. The book is truly fun, deftly capturing the excitement of discovering a new culture. Crucially, it is also highly interactive, making it perfect for younger readers. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone with an interest in learning more about China!" said.

"Very cool book with a little of everything (and I do mean a little). Good illustrations and simple explanations, but if you're looking for depth, look elsewhere, this only scratches the surface." said.

"China is and will be among the most powerful forces shaping the 21st century, so if you want children with a good working knowledge of its culture, history, customs, geography, and more, this book is indispensable. It's a kind of child accessible encyclopedia of anything a child would want to know about the world's longest continuous civilization." said.
