"So much for plants being benign...these plants do far more than sit in the dirt and look pretty. I had always heard about the Venus Flytrap, but I had no idea there were other carnivorous plants in the world until I read this book with my son. What little boy wouldn't be fascinated with plants that can actually eat things? The well-written facts and colorful pictures were enough for Mommy to overcome the "eww" factor and enjoy this science-based book for kids.

While the book may be more geared to independent reading by older children, there are plenty of things that make it an entertaining read for parents reading to younger children too. You can always break it up and read a section each night, rather than tackle the entire thing in one sitting. You won't be bored, that's for sure.

The author did a good job putting all of these facts together and, as a self-proclaimed science geek, I look forward to seeing what topic he tackles next.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

"Lots of interesting facts about these odd plants--including why they evolved to eat meat and all the different ways that they trap their prey.

I think my favorite was the tentacled Sundew plant, which is both beautiful and creepy. The weirdest one was the Lobster Trapper, which actually looks like a vegetable-octopus.

I like that the author also included links to videos so I could see some of the plants catching their prey. And he even gives you tips if you want to grow one of these yourself!

I learned tons, and so will your child.
