"Night Monkey Day Monkey
Author: Julia Donaldson
Illustrated by: Lucy Richards

This is a classic picture story book about two monkeys with differences; they both live in the same jungle but are not aware of how different they are, each one is only familiar with its own world. Spending time in each other’s different world enabled each one of them learns something new. What seems normal to Day Monkey was absurd to Night Monday, but in the end they reached a compromise on how they could still spend time together and still appreciated each other’s world.

This book is amazing as it represents the world we live in today, the diversity in culture and belief and from a child’s perspectives the Monkeys were a representation of the world we are in, i.e. what’s a norm for one person may seem silly to another. This book is ideal for pre-school reading.

There is a slight twist to this the illustration in the book; apparently Night Monkey is pictured as a bright looking Monkey, while Day Monkey had a darker shade of colour, one would have expected it to be the other way round. I also like the fact that the illustration included rhyming picture, representing night time and day time activities, which are quite colourful.

This book could be used for curriculum support in terms of Religious Education (RE), where diversity and respect and values could be taught. Reading to a class and engaging them in a class discussion will be a good way to use this book.

" One of my favourites, the rhyme, as usual with Julia Donaldson, is fantastic. It's fun and informative, perfect for day time and night time :) " said.

" A book about differences . Being different and yet liking each other’s world accepting each other’s world and learning from the differences. Acceptance is the best lesson taught by this book. " said.
