"If you are in need a a smile this Valentine’s Day, then you must find a copy of THIS IS NOT A VALENTINE, a super poignant picture book by debut author Carter Higgins and children’s book veteran Lucy Ruth Cummins.

This book is not a Valentine, see. There aren’t roses or candy hearts; frilly edges or mushy kisses. Instead, it’s full of secret hiding spots, superhero capes, and two adorable kids learning what it means to really care for someone.

I’ve never been one for the mushiness of the holiday, but give me honest, sweet, real love any day, and I’m a fan.
THIS IS NOT A VALENTINE gives a nod to bashful, honest, handmade first crushes and the power of loving someone. It’s ridiculously sweet, and there’s one line (which I’m not spoiling!) near the end of the story that truly warmed my heart. THIS IS NOT A VALENTINE is one of those stories full of truth that’s applicable to all ages.

I also really loved that this is a diverse picture book!

If you have a little one on the cusp of school crushes and first love, this is a sweet story to put in their hands or even read aloud! Highly recommended for Valentine’s Day and every day after!

"It's not! Carter Higgins has written a Valentine Day story that offers up the idea to readers that true friendship is unrelated to glitter, hear shaped cards, and sweet treats, but rather the moments shared. Through the constant reiteration that every action and token given is not a Valentine, there is an offering that feels more meaningful: noticing what his friend loves to do and wear, investing time in creating something for her, giving away a cherished possession, and being comfortable enough to be himself, to mention a few. "Carter Higgins' adorable picture book THIS IS NOT A VALENTINE left a sweet impression the very first time I read it. This is one of those rare books with the *perfect* balance of humor, heart, kid appeal, adult nostalgia, and absolutely precious illustrations, and I had to go back through it several times before I put it away. This is definitely a book I will come back to again and again--not just at Valentines Day, but all year long! I look forward to reading much more from this talented author!" said.

"Thanks to the kidlitexchange for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is NOT a Valentine by @carterhiggins and Lucy Ruth Cummins. Such a sweet story that reminds us of the love, friendship, and relationships in young lives. I will definitely read this again closer to Valentine’s Day because the whole ‘love’ and making cards was a little confusing for my kindergartener this past Valentine’s Day!! This book helps to understand meaning of caring for people in our every day lives. Definitely keep this one on your list!

"Thanks to Chronicle Books for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

THIS IS NOT A VALENTINE is the perfect valentine for kiddos who aren’t quite ready for valentines yet. It’s not about the card, it’s about the perfect connection between two friends. It’s about all the little moments that add up to one big friendship. It’s about being together instead of being alone.

THIS IS NOT A VALENTINE is all the things our family celebrates on Valentine’s Day. True connection. Time together. Showing you care. No glitter allowed. The perfect sentiment for our Valentine’s Day table.

"This is a sweet picture book that would be perfect to share with young readers during the days leading up to Valentines Day. The little boy is giving and sharing all sorts of sweet and thoughtful gifts with the little girl who is his friend at school. But none of these are Valentines! This could generate a nice discussion about ways to show kindness to others. The illustrations, rendered in brush marker, gouache, graphite, colored pencil, crayon, ink, and charcoal, have a childlike whimsy that help make this such an endearing book. This could also make a nice Valentine gift for a special friend." said.

"I think the concept of this book is sweeter than the final product. Maybe because the concept is about how things beyond paper Valentines can show how much we care, but the product talks about boy/girl cooties and my daughter was simply confused about why the little boy wouldn't want to just be direct. I explained he was shy, but the straight "cootie" talk made that not exactly a believable reason. I hate to give a book with such sweet (diverse!) illustrations a low rating, but the "cootie" stuff just bothered me, because at this age, to bring in the ewwwww factor made me sad, and confused my daughter." said.

"This is NOT a Valentine. It's just a little note that tells readers they will enjoy this lovely picture book by Carter Higgins! Carter has taken all the Valentine-stereotypes and threw them out the school bus window, and shows us what Valentine messages really mean.

Valentines sparkle; they're pink and glittery.
But you might like the brown in the mud puddle.
Valentines have cooties that tumble out when you open them.
"But if we both get cooties...then we can have cherry juice...together."

This is NOT a Valentine. It's a good book to share with someone in February...
or any other month you like.
