"Many thanks to KidLitExchange for access to a free review copy of this book – all opinions are my own!

When Hillary Rodham Clinton Played Ice Hockey details the early life of this influential American figure. The book gives a great overview of events that shaped Clinton’s personality and choices in her adult life. It highlights how she developed habits related to perseverance and diligence, as well as a positive self-image. Also, her political experiences in high school and college are introduced, and there are also brief mentions of major events from her adult life. Don’t be deceived by the “played ice hockey” in the title, as this is one minor event among many more impactful moments from Clinton’s early life. This is a straightforward biography, and the unique aspect is that the emphasis is on details of early life rather than famous achievements.

The book includes an afterward that highlights major contributions from her adult life, and also includes discussion questions, additional resources, and a glossary.

"Thanks to the @kidlitexchange network, @RachelRuiz and @capstone_pub for the review copies of these books - all opinions are my own.

I had a very exciting day on Tuesday! Not only did I receive my Kid Lit Exchange mug, but I also received these two books in the mail! Ever since I first learned about Rachel Ruiz’s books, When Hillary Rodham Clinton Played Ice Hockey and When Rosa Parks Went Fishing, I’ve been looking forward to reading them. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed! Kids love picture book biographies and these will be even more exciting for them, because they tell about the childhoods of these remarkable women. The books are part of a series by @capstone_pub, Leaders Doing Headstands, which in my opinion should be on the shelves of every elementary library. Some of the other titles in the series feature the childhoods of Neil Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, Wilma Rudolph and Thomas Edison. These books will show kids that these leaders were once children who had lots of fun and adventures, just as they do, before they achieved greatness as adults. Reading these stories may convince the students that they, too, can aspire to do the same.

"Leaders Doing Headstands is a superb new picture book biography series focusing on famous figures in their youth. They are presented in a large-form picture book format that will be appealing to younger learners. WHEN HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON PLAYED ICE HOCKEY tells about Clinton's major political moments, but does not make them the highlight of the book - instead she is shown as a young girl and readers learn about her family, schooling and formative years. The illustrations are gorgeous and are sure to captivate during read alouds.

I will be purchasing the entire series for my elementary school library.
