" Met the artist at HeroCon and greatly admired her work. It’s probably that exposure to the real art that made me slightly disappointed in how it translated to the publication. IRL it was just stunning. But the 2 lost stars are really for a lack of nuance in the dialogue. Just didn’t flow, imho. " said.

" What makes this graphic novel compelling is the art. It’s gorgeous. The story is interesting enough but not surprising or extraordinary but when combined with the illustrations, the book is quite good and I’d gladly read the next one. " said.

" Wow! Great story. Great illustrations. I loved how Amy Chu and Janet Lee grabbed a hold of some of the oldest sea fables and wove them throughout. The illustrations are detailed, imaginative and ethereal - ones you could get lost in. " said.

" The artist's take on mermaids and their worlds is so beautiful. An Asian-inspired undersea palace... I'm mostly reading this for inspiration for how my own mermaid world should be constructed, and this is just truly lovely and creative " said.

" Lovely and fairytale-esq. I adored the Vietnamese characters, gorgeous undersea illustrations, and, of course, Cap’n Bill! Excellent for grades 5-8 and a treat for lovers of art and graphic storytelling. " said.

" I will start by saying graphic novels aren't normally my thing, but I did really enjoy this one. The artwork is beautiful and I loved the relationship between the main character and her grandfather. Her cat was a fun add in as well and what happens to him is fun too. So many layers to this seemingly simple story... would like to go back and read again some time honestly. " said.

"A sweet and whimsical story about a girl who must come to terms not just with her own wants and needs, but with her larger relationship to family and her family's history. The art is gorgeous, the story interesting. Its conclusions are perhaps a touch lacking in nuance, but if I'm being honest, I would be giving this book four and a half stars, just a smidge short of absolute perfection. It truly is a lovely book to hold in the hand, and I would think it would make for a fun adventure to read this book alongside a tween." said.

"SEA SIRENS is about a young girl named Trot who along with her grandfather and beloved cat Cap’n Bill find themselves in a wonderful underwater kingdom. There they meet it’s inhabitants the Sirens and their foes, the infamous Serpents!

The story and art is endearing and filled with all sorts of marvellous creatures. Cap’n Bill the cat is adorable, especially when through the magic of the Sirens, Trot is able to understand him when he speaks. The book and some of the characters are inspired by the writings of L. Frank Baum, who is one of my favourite authors.
